Margaret Blackwood Housing Association exists to enable people with physical disabilities to live as independently as possible in affordable housing in Scotland . We build and manage integrated developments designed to offer choice and satisfy individual needs.

Eday Gardens is a small modern housing complex designed to provide integrated accommodation for people with physical disabilities. Situated two and a half miles from Aberdeen city centre, it is close to an accessible shopping precinct, health centres, a rehabilitation centre, library and both primary and secondary schools. Woodend Hospital is nearby and both Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital are less than two miles away.

Opened in 1994, Eday Gardens is a mix of supported housing especially designed for wheelchair users and people who have limited mobility, and mainstream rented flats for tenants without disabilities.

Supported Housing. Prospective tenants of our Supported Housing Unit should be aged between 18 and 65. We ask that they make their own informed decision about accepting a tenancy or resident agreement and are motivated and committed to living as independently as possible. In return, we provide a high level of flexible assistance by professionally trained staff. This support is tailored to individual needs and is available on a 24-hour basis, whether the tenant lives alone or with his or her family.

The Supported Housing Unit is designed and managed to allow tenants privacy and choice within a secure and supportive environment. There are twelve fully self-contained homes consisting of:

6 single-person and 2 two-person flats which all include living room, double bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom with a wet-floor shower;
* 2 three-person bungalows, both of which feature living room, two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom with wet-floor shower, and carport;
2 four-person bungalows - one with two bedrooms and one with three bedrooms - each featuring living room, kitchen, bathroom with wet-floor shower, and carport.

Each property has double glazing, central heating, fire detection, alarm and call systems installed. Tenants can install their own telephones. Automatic door openers and other adaptations to suit individual needs can be provided. Communal facilities available to tenants of the supported flats and houses include a spacious lounge and dining room, a well equipped laundry and battery charging points for electric wheelchairs.

Housekeeping. As well as cleaning all the communal areas within the main building, the domestic staff help tenants to clean their supported accommodation flats as required.

Social Work. The six single-person supported flats are registered to Department registered provide residential care services.

Caring for Tennants. As well as having the security of 24-hour care from a tenants highly trained team on hand, the tenants in Margaret the keyworker system Blackwood supported housing can depend on the familiar and friendly help that comes from our "keyworker" system. Each tenant has a member of the support staff nominated as their keyworker. This will be someone to whom the tenant particularly relates and with whom they can discuss their specific needs. The keyworker, in co-ordination with other staff, helps the tenant work towards his or her personal goals. Tenants and keyworkers also develop support plans which are detailed programmes of care and support specifically tailored to meet individual needs.

Personal Choice. Supported Housing tenants are encouraged to the democratic approach participate fully in the running of Eday Gardens. Regular meetings are held where ideas, concerns and information can be shared. Comments and suggestions from mainstream tenants regarding the service they receive are very much welcomed by the management team.

Mainstream. Of the 26 properties at Eday Gardens, 14 are available Flats to anyone on the Aberdeen City Council housing list. Applications are made through the City Council's Housing Department in the normal way and not through the Association.
