Precious Little One

Organ Donation - The Gift of Life The medical advances during the 20th Century have contributed to some of the most significant milestones in history. Transplantation in particular has seen many developments since the first operation in 1905 when a cornea was successfully transplanted. Since then, blood transfusion has been established (in 1918) and the first kidney transplant took place in the same year. Even more amazing, the first heart transplant took place over 35 years ago in 1967.

UK - The Transplant Partnership

The Transplant Partnership is a wide-ranging coalition of professional and patient groups set up to campaign for a radical review of the organ donation system. By a "radical review" the Transplant Partnership is referring to the need to look afresh at the whole system to decide whether it provides the most effective way of organising and regulating organ donation in this country. The existing system has developed in an ad hoc fashion and could be more effective. It is necessary to stand back and take a broad overview of where we are now and where we want to be. This means undertaking a radical review of the system as whole, rather than in a piecemeal fashion, to identify a number of areas where improvements can be made. It is important to look at ways of encouraging more people to think about donation and to make their wishes known but we also need to develop the infrastructure so that more donors translate into more transplants.
